8 things I wish I knew when choosing my house … after being isolated in it.

Self-isolating has been interesting - good and bad interesting ... and after being stuck at home, there are things I'm realising about our house that I wish I knew when we chose it months ago. Here are 8 things I wish I knew when choosing our home ... after being isolated in it:

  1. I have to love my neighbourhood. If I can’t go in public or to work, I need to enjoy walking the streets of my suburb and have trails to hike or walk as a family or with our dogs.

  2. Are the living spaces open concept so I can chat with my fiancé and keep an eye on my dogs when in the kitchen or lounge?

  3. But is it TOO open concept? Do I have anywhere to hide?? I realise that I must have a space to hibernate to when we're all stuck at home. If I can shut the door, then even better.

  4. I need easy access to our yard for my dogs when we’re home all day or else they’ll drive me mad. I also need a yard I can just walk from my main living areas to and enjoy when stuck at home.

  5. I have to really love my kitchen if I’m housebound. If I can’t go out to eat, I’ll be spending heaps of time cooking at home so it must be practical for me to do that.

  6. Is there a secluded space for me to work?? I must have a separate area to set up my computer, make calls, and be productive when stuck at home.

  7. Is there enough space for me and my partner to not be on top of each other? Having separate ‘zones’ in the house is key to keeping our relationship together during isolation. Seriously.

  8. When we’re all at home, does the noise transfer from each level? Can we hear each other from room to room? I know you’re thinking “if I have to listen to my kids watching Baby Shark videos on repeat from every room in the house while working from home, I’m going to go nutty.” Am I right?

What is your list? What are your non-negotiables?
